Dr. John Carlos: The World's Fastest humanitarian
I'm So Obsessed - A podcast by CNET
One of the most iconic examples of athletes using their visibility to protest political and social issues took place at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. After placing first and third respectively in the 200-meter event, runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists atop the medal stand as the Star Spangled banner played. The act was meant to bring attention to human rights. 52 years later Dr. John Carlos, billed as the world's fastest humanitarian, is featured in the new documentary film Ali's Comeback: The Untold Story which covers the years Muhammed Ali was banned from boxing and what it took legally, socially and politically for him to make his comeback. Carlos cites Ali as a friend and peer who would tour schools in the US talking about activism and the importance of fighting for human rights. Learn more about your ad choices.
