The Definition of Success - EJ Manuel speaks at the 200+ Men of Hampton Roads 2021 ScholarsBreakfast. Erik Rodriguez "EJ" Manuel Jr. is a former American football quarterback. He played college football at Florida State, leading the Seminoles to an ACC championship and Orange Bowl win in his senior year, and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He gave up a shot at the Super Bowl for a new career. Now EJ Manuel is succeeding at the ACC Network. The best thing about Manuel’s post-football job is he made the decision without being forced to make it. Unlike many former athletes, he didn’t lose his job and then react. But the communications major had a backup plan. “I set control of a situation instead of allowing the league to do it for me,” he said. “That was the beauty in it.” At Bayside, he was named All-Tidewater, all-state, and Parade All-American. Manuel, a five-star recruit by Scout and four-star by Rivals, chose Florida State over LSU, Oregon, Tennessee, and Alabama. The 200+ Men Inc. formally, the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men Inc. is an aggregate of men in Hampton Roads Virginia who joined forces to develop and present coordinated approaches to addressing community issues and problems. The 200+ Scholars Recognition Program - formally, the 200+ Scholars Breakfast, is the signature event of The 200+ Men Foundation Inc. The event honors African-American high school males from Hampton Roads public and private schools who are graduating with a 3.0 or better GPA. Since the first 200+ Scholars Breakfast on May 16, 1998, some 7,500 African-American male scholars have been honored at the event. The Scholars Recognition Program is fortunate to receive support from several colleges and universities within and outside Hampton Roads. Annually, their representatives attend the event and announce scholarships to some of the honorees. Corporate partners, churches, voluntary organizations, 200+ members, and friends generously provide various levels of breakfast sponsorships. Due to COVID-19, this year’s event will be held virtually, but the fanfare and level of honor and recognition will not change. https://www.hr200plusmen.org
