How emotions and trauma affect your voice One woman was concerned about her decreased vocal range and tired-sounding, painful voice. After some time, it emerged that she had recently left an abusive relationship, but hadn’t realised that such emotional stress could affect her voice. After counselling and vocal rest, she gradually regained her previous sound. This shows that vocal issues may not be directly attributable to the folds themselves, but can be affected by other outside, stressful or psychological situations from starting a new job to death or illness in the family.
