The Trial of Mike “The Large Guy” Sarno

Gangland Wire - A podcast by Gary Jenkins: Mafia Detective - Mondays

Retired Intelligence Detective Gary Jenkins interviews Jim Cosenza about his recollections of the characters and the evidence in the trial of Chicago Outfit Capo Mike Sarno. Sarno was also known as the “Large Guy” or “Big Mike” for obvious reasons. I recommend you go back and listen to my two-part interview of retired ATF Agent Lou Valoze because he tells what it was like to work his way into a crew bossed by Sarno associate Mark Polchan. Mike Sarno inherited Jimmy Marcello’s video poker operation after he went to prison in the Family Secrets trial. This video poker organization will be Sarno’s downfall. Sarno exhibited typical Chicago Outfit behavior when he demanded all small video poker machine operators pay him a piece of the action. He found one man who refused, and the business got violent. After a bombing of a rival operator, the government infiltrated and turned a key associate who wore a wire. This is a very exciting story of the Chicago Outfit and how they had not progressed much since prohibition in their brutal tactics.
