Navigating Comparison & Competitiveness as Artists
Fail Like An Artist - A podcast by Phoebe Gander & Julie Battisti
Categories:
This week on the pod we discuss the tricky subject of comparison and competitiveness. We both admit to having these feelings especially during recent times when sales have been slower, and talk openly about how it makes us feel, and how we manage things when the green eyed monster inevitably does show up. We both realise that it is completely normal to feel a level of competitiveness and comparison, and it’s not about trying to quash that, but it’s what we do with those feelings that matters. We share personal anecdotes highlighting times when we’ve caught ourselves comparing, feeling jealous when we see fellow artists succeed, and how feelings of envy can actually be signposts towards growth. We chat about the negative impact of using others’ success as a metric to compare ourselves to, how to manage social media and stop the doom scroll… and how it’s far better to lean into community rather than see others as competition. So if you’ve ever compared yourself to other artists and feelings of scarcity are creeping in, you’re not alone!
