In this episode we're learning about the nuances between these very similar pieces of English language. It's very easy to get these words confused because they look...alike! 😬 But don't worry, today I'll help you understand the differences and give you lots of examples so you can see each one in action. See you tomorrow! These phrases are our focus today. They all use similar words but have very different meanings. It looks like rain! She looks like my mother! Wow! A lookalike! Don't they look alike! It looks like rain! We are using 'look' as we might use 'seem' in this case. The full sentence might be 'it looks like it's going to rain' It looks like it'll be busy today Again, future tense. Again, 'look' in place of 'seem'. We could also say 'it looks as though it will be busy today.' It looks like everyone is here. This time it's present tense. Again, 'seem' and 'look' are interchangeable. She looks like my mother! 'Looks like' or 'look like' in this way mean that someone has similar features or looks very similar to someone else. We can use this to describe people, animals or things. That dog looks like a panda. I look like my mother and my aunt. They look like they might be twins. In both these examples we mean they bear a resemblance or are very similar. Wow! A lookalike! A lookalike is someone who is dressed or acting in a way that makes them look like another person. It may be on purpose (it usually is), it may be accidental. A similar idea is 'doppelganger'. This means someone who is unrelated but looks very similar or exactly the same. These two ideas are similar but not the same. A doppelganger is born that way, they can't help it, they didn't choose it. However, they may decide to become a lookalike, and be paid to act like the other person. For example, Natalie Portman in The Phantom Menace and Kiera Knightly. In the Phantom Menace Kiera's character is acting as a lookalike. She is pretending to be Padme. We need a lookalike to stand in for him. There are so many Keanu Reeves lookalikes here! https://www.ladbible.com/news/keanu-reeves-gives-hilarious-reaction-after-being-asked-about-nfts-20211212 Don't they look alike! In this case we can describe two people, animals or things who look similar. I look like my mother. My mother and I look alike. The two sentences above have the same meaning, but the grammar and vocabulary is different. Have you noticed how alike you two are. Have you noticed how alike you two look? In the first sentence we're describing their personality. In the second sentence we're describing how they look. All the pandas in the world are alike. All the pandas in the world look alike. In the first sentence we are describing their behaviour or personality. In the second sentences we are describing how similar they appear to look.
