Today I'm reading from Simon Sinek's first book 'Start With Why', I'm just reading one page from the book so you understand his Golden Circle Principle. Then we're going to look at how we can apply this principle to your English Learning Goals and Strategies to build and maintain your motivation. You can also check out the TED Talk which tells you the main parts of this book. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ss78LfY3nE) Today we are finding out about the idea of starting with why and thinking about how it might apply to your language learning journey. In fact, you may find there are several areas of your life that would benefit from really considering WHY you WANT something or why you want TO DO something. Once you can get clear on the WHY it can give you much more clarity on HOW to proceed. It can also help you make better decisions, do something because it serves your PURPOSE, rather than because someone told you to do it, for example. Possible Goal: I want a promotion. Why? To get more money. And...? Can you think of a deeper reason? Possible Deeper Whys: To feel secure that I can provide for my future. To feel free to stop working and live the life of my dreams. To allow me to easily move to another job or build my own company. What does life look like AFTER You get the promotion? What kind of things will change? How will your life be better? Being able to come up with good, inspiring answers to these questions will help you create motivating reasons to keep working on your English and move towards your exciting future. I hope it's useful to you. I'd love to hear your Whys for learning English. Additional Vocabulary Concept - an idea or system Can you dig deeper? - This phrase is common in the self-help world and means can you think about this thing in a different way, rather than just thinking about it's obvious value can you find a stronger or more personal reason? Visualisations - this refers to making pictures in your head. This is a tool we can use to help us imagine situations which can help us think of new ideas and strategies or can give us motivation for a future plan. Especially in this day and age. - idiom - this is a phrase that we can use to finish a sentence. 'In this day and age' means related to the present, but can mean this generation or time as well. You're on track - you're back on track. - these two phrases are common when we talk about doing the right thing or going in the right direction. We can use 'you're on track' to confirm that you are going the right way or doing the right thing. We can use 'you're back on track' to confirm that someone was going in the wrong direction but now they are going the right way again (this can be in their life, rather than a literal road). We can also use 'you're way off track' for when we think someone is going the wrong way or doing the wrong thing. I hope you find this podcast useful. Let me know below if you get a chance to come up with some new motivations for your English journey. Don't forget to write down your WHY and hang it up on a wall where you can see it often. #esl #english #englishlistening #reading #simonsinek #emmaseslenglish #englishpodcast #englishgoals #motivation #startwithwhy
