Episode 27 - How to use 'Have Got' in English

In this episode we are looking at sentences using 'have got' and especially at time phrases using 'have got'. We use 'have' for many different things: possession or ownership, relationships, illnesses and how things or people are. 'Have got' is often used in less formal situations. I have three cars. I've got three cars. I have a boyfriend. I've got a boyfriend. I have Covid! I've got Covid! These all work and the meaning is the same. Sometimes in American English and now also occasionally in British English people miss out the 'have' altogether: I got Covid. Have Got for talking about time I've got until Tuesday to buy my Christmas presents. I haven't got a lot of time. We've got plenty of time. Have you got a minute? I've got some time. How much time have you got? Alternatively for more formal situations we would just use 'have' I have plenty of time. There isn't much time. Do you have a minute? How much time do you have? If the native English speaker you are talking to isn't an ESL teacher, they will not notice at all if you confuse 'have' and 'have got' for formal and informal situations.
