Today we looked at some vocabulary related to shopping. First we thought about deciding what to buy. 'Shop around' - 'I want to shop around some more.' - I want to spend some more time looking before I buy. 'To weigh up the pros and cons' - to look at the advantages and disadvantages of something. 'I hope this pans out' - Also 'I hope this works out' - Both of these mean that we hope something is going to happen the way we want it to happen. For example, we often use it for business deals we want to be successful. 'She has such bad taste!' - We use good and bad taste to talk about someone's style or their choices. 'Give him the benefit of the doubt, he knows what he's talking about.' - To trust them until they prove untrustworthy. People often ask 'give me the benefit of the doubt', they mean they want you to trust them. 'But what if they mess up?' - mess up - make a mistake, or it all goes wrong 'This phone has the lions share of the market.' - This phone is the most successful. Can also be used to mean the biggest or best portion of something. 'We need to show off this phone.' - We need to make sure it is on display and we demonstrate it's qualities well to customers. 'He's such a show off!' - He wants everyone to see how great he is at something. 'She always want's to be in the limelight.' - 'the limelight' is like the spotlight on the stage so this means she always wants to be the 'centre of attention', to be seen and recognised by everyone.
