Conference: The Future Of German History

German history has been a highly innovative field, often taking the lead in the historical profession in developing new approaches and methods. New societal challenges, however, have shifted the focus of interest towards problems that transcend national borders. Phenomena like globalization, climate change, or the crisis of liberal democracies have shaken up old paradigms and certainties. Given these challenges, how can we write German history today, and what will the future of the field look like? At the conference 'The Future of German History' in Amsterdam, historians discussed current research projects and explored future avenues of study. In this podcast you can listen to Hanco Jürgens, who will tell you more about the developments in the field of German History, and to professor Helmut Walser Smith, author of 'Germany. A nation in it's time' . Walser Smith reflects on german historians after WO II and more in general about blind spots that historians can have. You will also hear some of the speakers at the conference about their research, to give you an overview of the topics in the field of German history. Tune: Seafoam by Chad Crouch.
