Your Dog's Breed Is NOT An Excuse

Your dog’s breed is not an excuse🗣 . “Huskies can't be off-leash.” . “Chihuahuas are just yappy” . “Labs are always going to be overexcited around people and will never be calm.” . “Bulldogs can’t be trained because they’re lazy.” — Well, you better tell my husky she’s doing the off-leash thing wrong. Or the Frenchies and the bulldogs I’ve trained. Heck, that lab that learned how to be calm and polite around people better figure his stuff out Sure, breeds have stereotypes around them and for a reason. But just like the stereotypes above, it doesn’t mean you use it as a crutch not to improve your dog’s behavior. I see comments of owners almost saying these things as a badge of honor, that they have a particular breed of dog and so they can’t do XYZ. Just because you have a Malinois doesn’t mean you have to have a hyperactive, destructive velociraptor that destroys your life and home. If you have a Pug, Frenchie, or Bulldog, it doesn’t mean you can’t train it, just because they enjoy having a nice snooze and cuddle most of the time. Or a husky that will always run away dig holes in your yard and be vocal all of the time. All dogs deserve training, and all dogs can benefit from it. The moment you brush off your dog's behavior because of the breed and stop pursuing growth is the moment you began doing a massive disservice to your dog. Don’t use your dog’s breed as a crutch. Don’t stop trying to live a better, happier, fulfilled and balanced life with your dog because of a stereotype and behaviors your dog participates in that fit the stereotype. Do better. Be better.
