The right to an abortion may soon vanish. Last week the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and a majority of the justices appeared inclined to overturn both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. It is in that context that we revisit this July interview with Amy Sohn, author of “The Man Who Hated Women: Sex, Censorship, and Civil Liberties in the Gilded Age,” about Anthony Comstock, an anti-vice activist and U.S. Postal Inspector behind the 1873 Comstock Law which penalized the mailing of contraception (and information about contraception) with long sentences and steep fines.
