Woman Scars is a photo-audio project that gathers together portraits of women whose bodies bear scars which are the testimonies of adverse life events: illnesses, surgeries, losses, accidents, abuse - events that, far from constituting a disability, on the contrary, have transformed their bearers into stronger, wiser, more confident, and freer women. The photograph of each woman is accompanied by an audio story narrated by herself. This is the story of the scar depicted in the portrait and the story of the event that caused it, bringing about the transformation in her life. The project has, as its starting point, the self-portrait of the author who used her own story to open an empathetic dialogue with the women who were photographed and interviewed. Sometimes, events that leave traces on our bodies represent much more than the pain caused in the moment. They can mark the beginning of a new life. About the author *Eliza Zdru is a documentary filmmaker. She directed two feature-length documentary films and is now working on her third. Woman Scars is her first photographic project that aims to create impactful visual stories that give force to the feminine voice.
