Stephen Grover Cleveland was born in Caldwell, New Jersey on March 18, 1837. He was the fifth of nine children born to Richard Falley Cleveland, a Presbyterian minister, and Ann Neal Cleveland. The Cleveland family moved frequently due to Richard Cleveland’s pastoral assignments, eventually settling in Fayetteville, New York. Grover Cleveland’s early life was marked by modest means and a strong emphasis on education and religion. He attended the Fayetteville Academy and later the Clinton Liberal Academy in Clinton, New York. Following his father’s death in 1853, Cleveland left school to help support his family.
