Blame It On The Dark Star (Let's Talk About Radiohead)

In this week’s episode we momentarily diverge from our trek through the larger Dick’s Picks series to chat about one of the best live bands of the last 30 years, who inadvertently took some important cues from The Grateful Dead: Radiohead. Diving into their performance from June 17, 2006 at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, we explore the ways in which the band structures their gigs, their approach to road-testing certain tunes, and their own brand of experimentation within their live show.  The show is highlighted by an expertly-crafted setlist which focuses on their career as a whole while previewing some of their best tracks off their soon-to-be-released (at the time) 7th album, In Rainbows. Opening with “There There” before launching into “2+2=5” and “15 Step” set the tone for the night. Elsewhere, “Videotape” has perhaps its strongest performance ever, while “Dollars and Cents,” “The National Anthem” and “How To Disappear Completely” showcases the band’s ability to stretch out ideas in the live setting. Within their extended double encore, the band dips into their Kid A/Amnesiac period for excellent takes on “Pyramid Song,” “Like Spinning Plates,” “Idioteque” and the show closing “Everything In Its Right Place.” 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media.
